JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective 

The benefits specialist is responsible for assisting with the administration of all benefits and retirement programs, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, and 401(k) plan. The benefits specialist position also assists employees with benefits enrollment and questions, maintains employee database and files, and manages FMLA leaves.

 

Essential Functions

  • Ensures the accuracy of all benefits enrollments in the HRIS to provide vendors with accurate eligibility information.
  • Performs quality checks of benefits-related data on an ongoing daily, weekly and quarterly basis.
  • Assists employees regarding benefits claim issues and plan changes.
  • Enrolls employees with carriers, processes life status changes and verifies the eligibility of dependents enrolled in group plans.
  • Responds to benefits inquiries from managers and employees on plan provisions, benefits enrollments, status changes and other general inquiries.
  • Processes and administers all FMLA leave-of-absence requests. Effectively interprets FMLA implications as they relate to leaves of absences/disabilities.
  • Assists with the open enrollment process.
  • Assists benefits manager in completing benefits reporting requirements.
  • Manages the distribution and completion of all incoming department mail requests.
  • Documents and maintains administrative procedures for assigned benefits processes. 
  • Assists with the monthly billing reconciliation of carrier invoices.
  •  Provides and can create necessary reports as needed for administration of all plans.
  • Performs strategic benefits analysis based on data and actively assists in data management in the various HRIS systems.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines, where necessary. Essential that employee works pro-actively with the ability to plan ahead.
  • Have the ability to problem-solve thoughtfully and logically while incorporating different perspectives.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervision responsibilities.  

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office setting.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk and hear.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Required Education and Experience

  1. Associate's degree in HR or related field, but experience and/or other training/certification may be substituted for the education.
  2. One to two years' experience in HR and/or benefits administration.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor's degree in human resources or related field of study.
  2. Prior customer service experience.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  1. Must be able to perform regular duties and projects without close supervision.
  2. Demonstrate above average knowledge of MS Office products, particularly Excel.
