Job Description

We are seeking a Business Administration Specialist - Oversized/Overweight Vehicle Permitting to join our dynamic team within the Motor Carrier Division. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in permit processing, customer service, and regulatory compliance and a proven ability to analyze vehicle configurations and routes to ensure safe, compliant travel on Indiana highways.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and process permit requests for routine oversized/overweight vehicle movements in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Review and process company agreement applications to verify good standing at state and federal levels.
  • Analyze and process requests for special weight registration.
  • Update routing information daily to reflect current restrictions, detours, and closures.
  • Communicate with carriers via phone, email, mail, fax, and in person to authorize permits, provide statutory guidance, ensure compliance, and resolve issues.
  • Provide front-line customer assistance at the Customer Service Center and through remote channels.
  • Coordinate enforcement efforts with Indiana State Police, Motor Carrier Enforcement Division.
  • Coordinate superload routes with INDOT district engineers and maintain communication with district offices for current road data.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Two years post-secondary education in business, communications, or related field may substitute for work experience. Two years as a Program Coordinator.
  • Advanced knowledge of wheel and axle weight configurations in accordance with federal bridge standards.
  • Advanced knowledge of permit classes, vehicle configurations, and related general and special requirements.
  • Proficient knowledge of applicable Indiana Code and Federal Motor Carrier Regulations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with proven customer service abilities.
  • Ability to interpret technical materials and communicate in clear layman terms.
  • Proficient in analyzing routes using state, bridge, and width maps in relation to vehicle weight and safety.
  • Advanced knowledge of ACD telephone systems.
  • Knowledge of ethics and confidentiality laws.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in state government permitting or motor carrier operations.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
