Job Description

We are seeking a Regional Field Sciences Research Technician to join our team supporting CHRD field scientists. The role will assist with small-plot research at remote locations across Iowa, based near Des Moines, with primary work at the Johnston R&D Center. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in Midwestern agronomy for corn and soybean and a proven ability to establish reliable field trials, collect accurate field and laboratory data, and support insect and pathogen rearing.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in planning, establishing, and maintaining small-plot research trials across IA.
• Conduct field and laboratory data collection with accurate recordkeeping.
• Support insect and pathogen rearing, collection, and sample handling.
• Operate and maintain agricultural equipment including tractors, planters, sprayers, and harvesters.
• Perform basic mechanical service and upkeep of field and lab equipment.
• Apply pesticides using backpack and tractor-mounted sprayers per stewardship guidelines.
• Lead and coordinate seasonal crews, temporary labor, or interns to execute field tasks.
• Collaborate with field scientists to meet technical objectives and timelines.
• Support safe operations and adhere to company stewardship and safety culture.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• B.S. in an agricultural field and 2-5 years of experience with Midwestern field crops, focused on corn and soybean.
• Broad agronomic knowledge to establish and maintain reliable field trials for crops such as soybean, canola, corn, wheat, and sorghum.
• Understanding of commercial production practices including land preparation, irrigation, fertilization, and pest management.
• Hands-on experience with tractors, tillage, planting, spray equipment, and harvesters; ability to perform basic mechanical service.
• Ability to apply pesticides using backpack and tractor-mounted equipment.
• Strong oral and written communication with detailed recordkeeping skills.
• Ability to lead and manage crews and work effectively in a diverse team with minimal supervision.
• Flexibility to work outdoors in adverse weather, with occasional evenings or weekends.
• Ability to lift 20-60 lbs as needed and maintain a strong safety mindset.
• English communication proficiency in a team setting with diverse cultural backgrounds.

Preferred Skills:

• Ability to obtain a CDL and relevant pesticide applicator licenses.
• Experience coordinating logistics across multiple remote field locations.
