Job Description
We are seeking a Highway Safety & Impaired Driving Instructor to join our team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in impaired driving enforcement, drug recognition, and law enforcement training and a proven ability to design and deliver effective adult-learning curricula aligned to national standards. The position will be 3-4 weeks at home with on-site presence 2-3 days as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Develop lesson plans and course content for DUI, drugs of abuse, impaired driving, and highway safety courses.
- Create and update curriculum materials, instructor guides, and resources.
- Design and implement practical training, scenario-based exercises, and assessments.
- Conduct course critiques and evaluate training effectiveness using defined metrics.
- Serve as a subject matter expert instructor on drug recognition and impairment.
- Collaborate with the DPS Impaired Driving Coordinator and Division Chief on program planning and delivery.
- Align training with national standards, DECP guidelines, and emerging trends in impairment detection.
- Provide guidance on instructional methodologies and adult learning principles.
- Support statewide coordination of DECP activities and instructor development.
- Produce reports, documentation, and recommendations for program enhancement.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Prior experience as a sworn law enforcement officer.
- Deep familiarity with the Drug Evaluation and Classification Program (DECP) operations and coordination.
- Demonstrated expertise in impaired driving enforcement, drug recognition, and DUI investigative practices.
- Experience developing curricula, lesson plans, and assessments for law enforcement audiences.
- Proficiency in instructional delivery and adult learning principles.
- Ability to evaluate training effectiveness and implement improvements.
- Strong communication, documentation, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience serving as a DRE, DRE Instructor, or DECP State Coordinator.
- Background in curriculum alignment with national highway safety programs and standards.
