Job Title: Penalty Review Specialist
Location: Hybrid - Phoenix, AZ, 85007
Duration: 12 Months with possibility of extension
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (40 hours/week)
Pay Rate: $17.99/hour on W2
Job Overview:
The Penalty Review Specialist will be responsible for analyzing tax records, evaluating abatement applications, and ensuring compliance with Arizona tax laws. The role requires strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to assess financial records, determine tax liabilities, and recommend solutions. The specialist will also educate taxpayers on filing requirements, document findings for hearings, and assist in implementing recordkeeping and accounting systems.
Key Responsibilities:
- Examine and analyze data for penalty abatement applications.
- Request additional information and evaluate testimony/evidence to determine compliance.
- Conduct research on financial records and historical data to make findings in compliance with Arizona tax laws.
- Recommend and implement solutions for identified financial or compliance issues.
- Educate taxpayers on filing requirements and suggest corrective actions for noncompliance.
- Utilize Google Suite and Tax Accounting Systems for data compilation and record management.
- Prepare detailed case files and reports for hearings, and testify on behalf of the Arizona Department of Revenue when necessary.
- Maintain effective communication with government agencies, taxpayers, and other stakeholders.
- Apply accounting principles to calculate taxes, penalties, and interest.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal tax regulations through analytical research.
- Work independently or collaboratively in a team setting while handling multiple tasks efficiently.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Education: Some college coursework in Accounting, Business, or a related field OR two years of professional experience.

Experience:
- Strong understanding of accounting and mathematical principles.
- Proficiency in Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office (Excel, Sheets, Outlook).
- Ability to conduct research, analyze financial data, and generate reports.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work under deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
- Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Spanish-speaking ability is a plus.
- Prior experience in tax compliance, penalty assessments, or related government work.
