Job Description
We are seeking a Component Design Engineer to join our Global Mechanical Systems Capability function. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in gears, seals, bearings, and shafting component design within gas turbine environments and a proven ability to deliver robust, manufacturable design solutions that meet system and sub-system requirements on time and with quality.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver design solutions for components, complex assemblies, and engines that address safety, manufacturability, physical and functional robustness, unit and lifecycle cost, weight, maintainability, and repair.
- Provide complete definition packages to stakeholders including manufacturing, project customers, airframers, partners, and analysis teams using conventional methods and Model Based Definition within a Model Based Environment.
- Create and deploy automated and integrated toolsets and workflows for repeat designs using house styles, standard features, and standard assessments to optimize automated MBD, manufacturing, and measurement definitions.
- Drive elimination of non-conformance and delivery of producibility through incorporation of manufacturing and measurement capability, lean standardization, robust design, systems engineering, risk management (xFMEA), and design-in-context methods.
- Perform quality assurance checks on design documents, models, and drawings per RRMS technical requirements with a proactive zero-defects approach.
- Conduct formula-based calculations and automated analyses for part dimensioning and component behavior, including stability, stiffness, profiles, balance points, and weights, using approved rules, tools, and methods.
- Create technical documents that comply with process, knowledge management, information, and data policies.
- Enable through-life Supply Chain Design and lifecycle profitability via non-conformance management, drawing alterations, repair instructions, manual limits, and technical variants.
- Plan, manage, and execute external design packages with service providers or suppliers through to approval of designs and documentation.
- Manage product configuration and assure data integrity across the lifecycle.
- Execute sub-system integration and apply systems engineering and robust design tools to ensure sub-system attributes meet agreed requirements.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or regional equivalent, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5 years of component design experience focused on gears, seals, bearings, and shafts.
- Proficiency in mechanical design methodologies and cross-discipline concepts including manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering, and product definition.
- Ability to apply logical, analytical, and innovative thinking to solve technical problems and balance technical and business parameters.
- Knowledge of product integrity, liability, and certification frameworks.
- Membership in a relevant professional body is preferred. Chartered status or regional equivalent is a plus.
- Effective communication and presentation skills across organizational levels.
- United States citizenship required. Bachelor's in Engineering required.
Preferred Skills:
- Gas turbine component design experience.
- Experience with Model Based Definition and automated design workflows.
Screening Questions
- What is your experience with component design? List component types and the extent of your work on them, including clean-sheet design and modifications.
- Describe one of your most difficult component design projects. What made it challenging and how did you address the challenges.
Role Context
This role supports multiple programs with a focus on candidates who can contribute immediately to gears, seals, bearings, and shafting design work. The position is open due to gaps in available applicants with direct design experience in these areas.
