Job Description:
seeking a dedicated and motivated Laboratory Technician to join our Controlled Environments Team. In this role, you'll contribute to advancing agriculture by supporting innovative research that addresses global food challenges. The position involves performing routine tasks related to greenhouse plant care, data collection, and experimental support, while ensuring compliance with all safety and operational standards.
Work shift 7:30AM - 4:00PM, M-F with rotational weekend work required (approximately every 6th weekend, 7:30AM - 4:00PM). A competitive bonus structure is offered, including $500 after six months and $1,000 after 12 months, with annual renewal for continued employment.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform daily plant care tasks such as pollinating, watering, drenching, harvesting, and seed handling for various crops (e.g., wheat, corn, soybeans).
Collect and store plant tissue samples for laboratory analysis while maintaining sample identity and proper storage conditions for thousands of samples.
Assist with greenhouse experiments by collecting data, maintaining records, executing lab analysis requests, and coordinating with collaborators.
Plan and execute logistics for wheat greenhouse experiments, including preparing project requests, inputting experimental data, and communicating with internal leads.
Perform routine greenhouse sanitation tasks, including plant disposal and general cleaning.
Collaborate with researchers and cross-functional teams on diverse projects related to doubled haploid crops.
Ensure adherence to standard operating and safety protocols.
o Filling flats and pots with substrate
o Planting seeds into flats and pots
o Transplanting plants into flats and pots
o Moving carts of plants in and out of greenhouses
o Using a pallet jack to move pallets of substrate
o Printing tags at the tag printing station
o Driving company van from one building to another (1-2 times per week)
Qualifications:
o Excellent communication skills and ability to cooperate with other team members.
Excellent personal interaction skills to promote a positive working environment.
o Proficient with computer tools like Excel and Microsoft.
o High attention to detail and the ability to work with accuracy in a timely manner.
o Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
o Valid drivers license
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, plant physiology, molecular biology, entomology, plant pathology, or related field; OR three or more years of related experience (equivalent education and experience accepted).
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety and operational protocols.
Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
High self-motivation, positive attitude, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
Basic computer skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and willingness to learn internal research software.
Physical capability to stand/sit for extended periods, lift up to 30 lbs, and perform repetitive tasks in a warm, humid greenhouse environment with year-round pollen exposure.
Work Environment & Schedule:
Warm, humid greenhouse conditions with repetitive tasks.
Weekend-shift schedule: Saturdays and Sundays (7:30 AM-4:00 PM) with two weekdays off.
Bonus Structure:
$500 bonus after 6 months of employment.
$1,000 bonus after 12 months of employment (renewable annually for continued employment).
