Job Description
We are seeking a Penalty Review Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in processing Power of Attorney and Penalty Abatement tax forms, customer support, and tax accounting data entry and a proven ability to review, research, and resolve taxpayer inquiries while maintaining accurate records.
Responsibilities:
- Process AZ Forms 285 and 290, reviewing submissions for accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare and process Power of Attorney and Penalty Abatement forms for data entry into the tax accounting system or PRU team inventory master.
- Organize and securely store all documents and actions across paper, email, and fax channels.
- Research and resolve POA and prescreening issues and questions.
- Serve as a point of contact for taxpayer inquiries.
- Assist with proper routing of emails in the delegated mailbox.
- Provide Tier 1 customer care to taxpayers on form completion.
- Escalate intermediate and complex inquiries and cases to senior team members.
- Process incoming and outgoing mail as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Proficiency with Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office, with strength in Sheets/Excel and Gmail/Outlook.
- Research, analytical, critical thinking, problem solving, and call handling skills.
- Understanding of accounting and mathematical principles; ability to calculate tax, penalty, and interest assessments.
- Knowledge of statutes, laws, and procedures governing filing requirements and assessment of penalty and interest.
- Ability to learn various tax types, policies, procedures, legal references, and rules of evidence.
- Effective verbal and written communication; ability to work independently and in a team with changing priorities.
- Computer proficiency with strong spreadsheet skills and 10-key experience.
- Associate's Degree or equivalent experience.
Preferred Skills:
- Some college coursework in accounting, business, or a closely related field; or two years of professional experience.
- Spanish language proficiency.
Work Arrangement & Hiring Process
- Hybrid role. Approximately 10% onsite for mail processing and 90% remote.
- Remote interviews.
