Job Description
The Controlled Environments Team seeks a motivated and responsible Greenhouse Technician to support research operations at a four-acre facility in Johnston, Iowa. The role will assist with routine greenhouse duties including seeding, pollinating, transplanting, watering, harvesting, tissue sampling, and data collection and handling. The technician will maintain a professional, clean, and safe work environment and meet all compliance standards.
Responsibilities:
Perform daily plant care, including monitoring watering needs, harvesting, discarding plants, and seed processing and handling for corn, soybean, wheat, and other crops.
Move carts of plants in and out of greenhouses and assist with experiments, data collection, and record maintenance.
Operate threshing machinery safely as trained and follow all safety and process protocols.
Execute sanitation tasks, including discarding regulated material, destroying waste, cleaning pots and containers, and sanitizing rooms.
Maintain accurate plant and seed identity for large volumes of unique samples.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
Ability to follow standard operating procedures and safety and ergonomics protocols with attention to detail.
Strong communication and organizational skills with self-motivation and the ability to work independently and in a team with minimal supervision.
Ability to stand and sit for long periods and lift at least 30 lbs, and to perform repetitive tasks in a warm, humid greenhouse with year-round pollen.
Preferred Skills:
Bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, biology, or related field, or three or more years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience operating machinery safely and following protocols.
Basic computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, with the ability to learn internal research software.
Work Schedule & Additional Details:
Shift: 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Driving required: No.
Special equipment required: None.
Total positions: 1.
