Job Description
We are seeking a Greenhouse Technician to join our team supporting controlled environment research at a four-acre facility in Johnston, Iowa. The ideal candidate will have experience in greenhouse operations, plant care, and research support and a proven ability to execute breeding experiments, maintain accurate records, and uphold safety and compliance standards.
Responsibilities:
Perform daily greenhouse plant care, including pollinating, watering, harvesting, and seed handling for wheat and other crops.
Assist with experiments by collecting data, maintaining records, executing lab analysis requests, and communicating logistics with process leads.
Support planning and logistical execution of wheat breeding greenhouse experiments, including preparing project requests and inputting experimental data.
Perform routine greenhouse sanitation, including discarding and general cleaning.
Collaborate with researchers on organizational work for a cross-functional team focused on doubled haploid crop projects.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, plant physiology, molecular biology, entomology, plant pathology, or related field, or three or more years of related experience. Equivalent combinations considered.
Attention to detail with adherence to standard operating and safety or ergonomics protocols.
Effective communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision.
Basic computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, with ability to learn internal research software.
Ability to stand and sit for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs. Ability to perform repetitive tasks in a warm, humid greenhouse with pollen present year-round.
Preferred Skills:
Experience supporting wheat breeding or doubled haploid crop projects.
Prior work in controlled environments or research greenhouse operations.
Schedule:
This is a full-time role at 40 hours per week. Standard hours are approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekend work is required on a rotating schedule roughly every six weeks, with one company-observed holiday worked on a rotational basis. Driving is not required. Special equipment is not required.
