Job Description

At Genentech, we pursue science to discover and develop medicines for people with serious diseases. As a Bioprocess Manufacturing Technician, you will produce medicines in a highly automated, cGMP-controlled environment. You will follow defined batch recipes and standard operating procedures to operate production equipment across raw material dispensing and aliquoting, cell culture, and purification. You will maintain accurate records and comply with all regulatory requirements. This contract role has the possibility of conversion to a permanent position. Facilities include Stainless Steel and Single-Use systems supported by Production Services.

Manufacturing areas include:

  • Production Services: Weighing and aliquoting raw materials, small-scale solution prep, washing and autoclaving, preparation of equipment parts and assemblies, and environmental monitoring.
  • Upstream Manufacturing: Cell growth from inoculation in spinner flasks through large-scale bioreactors, harvesting via centrifugation and depth filtration.
  • Downstream Manufacturing: Purification of harvest using chromatography and reformulation techniques, preparation of product for shipment to final fill and finish sites.

New team members are typically assigned to one area to build capability, with potential to rotate as experience grows.

Responsibilities:

  • Comply with safety requirements, cGMP, SOPs, and manufacturing documentation. Report safety and environmental incidents immediately.
  • Utilize automated systems to operate, clean, and sterilize production equipment.
  • Perform aseptic operations in small-scale cell culture, maintain cell banks, and execute seed lab activities.
  • Operate fermenters, centrifuges, harvest systems, and protein purification units.
  • Operate and clean fixed tank, filtration, and large-scale column chromatography systems.
  • Prepare media and buffer solutions required for production.
  • Clean, assemble, and sterilize equipment using glass washers and autoclaves.
  • Execute environmental monitoring throughout the facility.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in English for reading, writing, and communication.
  • Computer literacy with Microsoft and Google platforms; ability to learn automated systems.
  • Ability to work all listed shifts, required overtime, and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb multiple flights of stairs daily and lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to work in cleanrooms with required gowning and PPE; no makeup or jewelry in cleanrooms; no personal devices without approval.
  • Comfort working with hazardous materials and chemicals under cGMP.
  • Ability to pass job-related tests and certifications for cGMP operations.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Skills:

  • Associate degree, Life Sciences or Engineering degree, or Biotech certificate from an approved program.
  • Experience in upstream, downstream, or production services within cGMP manufacturing.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy in execution and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Sound judgment with ability to recognize deviations and escalate appropriately.
  • Growing technical competency in at least one manufacturing department.
  • Effective time management and communication.

Shift Details:

Shifts support 24x7 operations. Overtime is paid per applicable laws. Swing and night shifts include a differential. Open availability receives priority. Onboarding includes 3-4 weeks, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm, followed by on-the-job training on the assigned shift.

  • 12-hr Day: 6:00 am-7:00 pm. Sun-Tue plus every other Wed; or Wed-Fri plus every other Sat.
  • 10-hr Day: 6:00 am-4:30 pm. Sun-Wed; or Wed-Sat.
  • 10-hr Swing: 3:30 pm-2:00 am. Sun-Wed; or Wed-Sat.
  • 12-hr Night: 6:00 pm-7:00 am. Sun-Tue plus every other Sat; or Wed-Fri plus every other Sat.
